The activity of this Rome-based office of architecture revolves around two fundamental elements: the customers and the project. Together with the customers, IFArchitects perform the process to understand their needs and wishes, to define them in pictures and quantities, to choice technologies and materials, and to build the architectural form to embody all of them. The project is not only the key to plan and critically guide this process but, as a system of written and visual documents, it is the tool that ensures formal and constructive consistency to the work from the general to the particular.
IFArchitects' approach and beliefs are a natural consequence of a research led for two decades in different areas and scales of architecture. Ilaria Borocci and Fabio Colonnese, founders of IFArchitects, are constantly engaged with academic research, urban sketching, and creative actions in the close social context. These activities result in a handcraft design method that is largely based on the use of traditional drawing and maquette, relegating the computer assisted drafting and modeling to the final stage of project.
The kinesthetic and bodily experience of space is the main focus of IFArchitects' research, which often results in articulated domestic spaces, built-in furnishings able to concentrate many functions within the building shell, also by selecting high-quality traditional materials such as wood, stones, and fabric to enrich the interiors. A similar domestic approach is also present in the retail design in order to offer a customer-oriented environment often with specific complements.
